Act of Independence
On August 24, 1991, the Act of Independence is proclaimed, declaring the creation of an independent democratic Ukrainian state – Ukraine, with its capital in Kyiv.
This is not the first attempt of the Ukrainian people to gain the status of an independent country:
- 1649 – founding of the Hetmanate. Liquidated by the Russian Empire.
- December 13, 1917 – the proclamation of independence of the Crimean People’s Republic. Liquidated by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
- January 22, 1918 – the proclamation of independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. Occupied by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
- February 16, 1918 – the proclamation of independence of the Kuban People’s Republic. Liquidated by the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.
- October 19, 1918 – the proclamation of independence of the West Ukrainian People’s Republic. Occupied by the Republic of Poland.
- March 15, 1939 – the declaration of independence of Carpathian Ukraine. Liquidated by the Kingdom of Hungary.
- June 30, 1941 – the proclamation of the restoration of independence of the Ukrainian state. Liquidated by the German Third Reich.
